Dr. John Herrity, D.V.M., Practice Owner
Dr. Herrity grew up in the Springfield area and attended West Springfield High School. He began working for the doctors that owned Burke Animal Clinic when he was in the eighth grade. He loved working with animals, and soon discovered that he enjoyed the busy veterinary hospital atmosphere. It wasn’t long before he realized that his dream was to one day become a veterinarian.
In order to achieve his dream, Dr. Herrity attended Virginia Tech and graduated with honors from the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinarian Medicine in 1986. Dr. Herrity enjoys the diversity of veterinary medicine and is continually expanding his skills. His particular interests lie in ultrasound, laparoscopy, internal medicine and surgery. He also enjoys working with the animals, as well as helping the owners understand their pets’ health issues.
Dr. Herrity and his wife Michelle have two sons and two daughters. Patrick and Bryan are both attending college, Kelsey has started elementary school, and the newest member of the family, Jessica, was adopted from Thailand in 2004. A Labradoodle named Bradley and a terrier mix named Rosie complete their family.

Dr. Robert Ihrig, D.V.M., Practice Owner
Dr. Ihrig is also “home grown”. He was born in Arlington and moved to Springfield shortly thereafter. He graduated from West Springfield High School. While in high school, he joined the Burke Animal Clinic family as an animal care assistant. This is where he first met Dr. Herrity. His enjoyment of the position prompted him to change his career goal from architecture to veterinary medicine.
After high school he attended Virginia Tech; during school breaks Dr. Ihrig continued working as an assistant at the clinic, gaining valuable experience all the while. He graduated with honors in 1985 from Tech’s veterinary school, Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinarian Medicine. After graduation he returned home to the Springfield area. Since then he has been a valued member of our staff. Dr. Ihrig enjoys all aspects of veterinary medicine.

Dr. Stewart Marsh, Jr., D.V.M.
Dr. Marsh, a native Virginian, graduated from Fairfax High School before joining the Coast Guard. He graduated from the Coast Guard Academy in 1971. He then devoted the next twenty-two years of his life to serving our country. After his retirement from the Coast Guard, Dr. Marsh made the decision to become a veterinarian and graduated from Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinarian Medicine in 1999.
Currently, Dr. Marsh and his wife live on a farm stocked with an impressive assortment of animals. They have three dogs, two terrier mixes and one Border collie, and six cats. They also have two miniature horses, two llamas, two alpacas, five peafowl, and one goat. In addition, they own seventy sheep that provide the natural fleeces for hand spinning hobbyists.

Dr. Ylva Bostrom, V.M.D.
Dr. Bostrom completed her undergraduate degree at Princeton University and graduated in 1996 from the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine. Following veterinary school, she completed an Internship in Small Animal Medicine and Surgery at VCA South Shore Animal Hospital in South Weymouth, Massachusetts. Dr. Bostrom returned to Northern Virginia in 1997 and began practicing at Burke Animal Clinic. She is a member of the American Veterinarian Medical Association, the Virginia Veterinary Medical Association, and the Northern Virginia Veterinary Medical Association.
Dr. Bostrom spent time growing up in Northern Virginia, as well as Sweden. She shares her home with her husband and her two cats, Fenwick and Delancey. Fenwick is a Devon Rex who was in a long-term hip and elbow dysplasia study at the University of Pennsylvania, but still jumps up on things he shouldn’t. Delancey is a Balinese and enjoys being brushed and held. In her free time, Dr. Bostrom enjoys swimming and running.

Dr. Elizabeth Johnson, D.V.M.
Dr. Elizabeth Johnson joined the Burke Animal Clinic team in May of 2005. She grew up in a military family and lived primarily in Colorado and Virginia. Dr. Johnson went to Woodbridge Senior High School. She received her undergraduate degree in Animal and Poultry Sciences from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. She received her Veterinary degree from the Virginia Maryland Regional Collage of Veterinary Medicine in 2005. She currently resides in Fairfax with her husband and Afghan Hound, Chester. Dr. Johnson enjoys riding horses, spending time with family and friends, helping others, and enjoying life. Dr. Johnson is dedicated to helping people and pets live happier and healthier lives together.

Dr. James MacLean, D.V.M.
Dr. MacLean also grew up in Springfield. He graduated from West Springfield High School. He worked in Springfield area veterinary hospitals as an assistant and adopted his first pet cat from Burke Animal Clinic during high school. After high school he attended Old Dominion University and transferred to Virginia Tech as a Biology major. He graduated from Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine in 1994. After graduation he worked in a small animal hospital in Waldorf, MD for 12 years and commuted from Northern Virginia. After much thought, he gave up the battle to the Woodrow Wilson Bridge and joined the Burke Animal Clinic Team. He lives locally with his wife, two young children and two tolerant cats. |
