Jerky Pet Treats May be Harmful to Your Pet
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has been actively investigating the causes of reported pet illnesses associated with jerky pet treat products. As of May 1, 2014, the FDA has received approximately 4800 complaints of illness related to consumption of chicken, duck, or sweet potato jerky treats, nearly all of which are imported from China. Although the investigation is still underway and a cause of illness has not been found, Burke Animal Clinic advises clients to not feed their pets jerky treats, tenders or strips. If your pet has been eating jerky treats and exhibits any of the following symptoms, please call your vet: decreased appetite, decreased activity, vomiting, diarrhea (sometimes with blood or mucus), increased water consumption and/or increased urination.
