Much like people, eye discharge is fairly common, particularly for dogs. While it can be perfectly normal, it is often a signal that something more serious is going on. If you suspect your dog or cat is suffering from an eye infection, it may be time to see the veterinarian. To help you determine your pet’s needs, the staff at Burke Animal Clinic wants to share our pet eye infection FAQ.
What Causes Pet Eye Infections?
There are a number of reasons why an animal could contract an eye infection, including bacterial infections, inadequate tear production, injury, fungal infections, and parasites. If your dog or cat has a weakened immune system, the eye infection could be a symptom of the condition.
What are the Symptoms of Pet Eye Infections?
The first sign that your furry friend might have an eye infection is an unusual discharge from the eye. It could be smelly, thick, clear, crusty, or creamy. Other symptoms include:
- Eye discoloration
- Inflammation, swelling or redness in the eye
- Rapid or constant blinking
- Keeping the affected eye closed
- Light sensitivity
- Squinting
- Rubbing at the eye
How Can the Veterinarian Help?
While some eye irritations or infections will pass on their own, most require a trip to the animal hospital. Depending upon the cause, your veterinarian may prescribe eye drops, prescription medication, or surgery. Failure to treat an infection can lead to worsening symptoms, vision problems, or blindness.
How Can I Help?
Gently wipe away the discharge with a warm damp cloth. If the mucous is hard, leave it for your veterinarian to clean. If the problem persists for more than two days, take your pet to see the vet as soon as possible.
